Kiss o' the Sea

Dippin' a Toe

All beginnings are delightful;
The threshold is the place to pause.
-- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Kiss o' the Sea

We made it to the tideline!

Our host passed through between fishing trips, built a hospital grade muffler from scratch(!), repaired his excavator (a mighty beast... sorry, no pics), remodeled the approach to the beach and hauled us to within spitting distance of the water. Very humbling!

Tides are dropping for a few days, before springing back... we should be floating - skids and all - by the end of the week.

Our view - for so long congested to port and starboard - has opened into sweeping vistas. Our windows are now  full of beauty.

It's... it's... like reawakening!

Sailing is still a ways off. We've got sails sewn but no rig. Rudder (not installed) but no offcenter-boards. Galley but no stowage.

But we can almost taste it!

WooHoo!

  1. She looks GREAT sitting out there ready to go! Being able to step back and look at her in her element (even if really just on the shore thereof) has to be quite a thrill for you!

Wayward is one neat looking boat - so unconventional yet by virtue of your experience with Luna and Slacktide - guaranteed to meet your needs. And that's the whole deal right there, a boat for you. Not something cookie cuttered to vaguely mimic a suburban house inside, with everything compromised so much as to appeal to as large an unenlightened market as possible.

Wayward is form following function - not the other way around. She is sensible shoes instead of spiked heels. She is flannel jogging pants draped over toned muscles instead of a corset forcing flab to fit a tight dress.

She is an honest boat! I love it.

  2. Looks Beautiful! How wide are your OCB guards? I see supports, is that to allow walking on them? How much of the season do you have left or is it back to care taking?

    1. Hi Dennis,

      Thanks!

The guards are... umm... 8 or 9in? The struts stabilize their outboard edges against green water impact, boarding from either end and occasional walk-along.

No caretaking this year. We hope to be sailing by mid-November, but you know how that goes!

    2. Are the cables that prevent the lee boards from winging out included in that 8-9"? I will need to make my guards fold-able to stay within the trailer width limits.

    3. I went out and measured... they're 7 1/2in (2x8) before the slot/cable arrangement. In our case, the slot (and OCBs) will be 2 1/2in, with 3/8in SS cable. The mountings add another 1/2in or so.

Folding is a cool idea, which would work for catwalks, too. I'd recommend strong, locking struts, though.

      Can't wait to see yours!

    1. Hi Mimi,

Thanks! Glad we finally have this to share.

Hope you're tucked away for the winter?

  4. Hi Alan,

"Sensible shoes rather than spiked heels." I like that! One of the names that made the (long) list was SLIPSHOD... With overtones of shoes in which one slips along, in addition to the usual meanings. 8)

They may be little boxes, but any ticky-tacky is DIY.

    1. Hi,

Sorry, but I've barely kept up with the main blog at triloboats.blogspot.com.

We've been out sailing and everything has been working out well. Most of it was tried-and-true. The sails work great in prototype... we've made the new ones and hope to get them grommeted and hung in the next couple of weeks.

I keep intending to come back and finish this blog out with a lot of the construction deets that got skipped over. Last winter, covid blew my good intentions out of the water!

      Thanks for your interest.

About Me

My photo
Anke and I live aboard WAYWARD, our T32x8 ketch. We sail by wind, tide and muscle in the waters of mid- to northern Southeast Alaska. We try to maximize the joys of life, and minimize the chores. ........ We live between the communities of SE Alaska, but drop in to visit with friends. ........ We're working toward a subsistence lifestyle, somewhat impeded by addictions to coffee, chocolate and cheese. ........ We think TEOTWAWKI is looming, and while we won't be ready, we'd at least like comfortable seats. Our personal TEOTWAWKI is definitely approaching in the guise of older age. We're prepping our fleet and assets in the face of one or more decades of declining abilities, aiming to live happily on or very near the water until the end!
